Watercraft / Boat Insurance

Coverage for boats and watercraft.

Who this is for

Owners of boats, jet skis, and other pleasure craft · Families who trailer a boat between lakes · Households that already carry home and auto and want the boat tied in · Anyone a marina or lender requires to show proof of insurance

A boat is not automatically covered the way a sofa is. Most homeowners policies give little or no protection once the boat is in the water. Boat insurance is the policy written for the vessel itself.

How it works

Watercraft coverage can pay to repair or replace the hull, cover you if you injure someone or damage another boat, and add extras such as medical payments, uninsured boaters, and on-water towing. The right policy depends on the type of vessel, horsepower, where you use it, and whether it is stored on a trailer, in a slip, or on a lift. Small fishing boats, personal watercraft, and larger pleasure craft are not treated the same. We also look at whether the boat should sit under a homeowners endorsement or needs a standalone policy, and how it works with an umbrella.

Who this is for

  • Owners of boats, jet skis, and other pleasure craft
  • Families who trailer a boat between lakes
  • Households that already carry home and auto and want the boat tied in
  • Anyone a marina or lender requires to show proof of insurance

What it typically covers

  • Physical damage to the boat and, often, the trailer
  • Liability if you cause injury or damage on the water
  • On-water towing or assistance, when included
  • Passenger medical payments, when included

A simple example

A hidden stump damages the lower unit on a Saturday afternoon. Hull coverage can help pay the repair. If you also injure a skier, liability is the part that responds to that claim.

Good to know

  • Homeowners policies often cap or exclude boats above a certain length or horsepower.
  • Lay-up periods, navigation limits, and operator age rules are common — read them before the season starts.

Coverage, eligibility, and terms vary by location and underwriting.
