Coverage for equipment, tools, and machinery in transit, on job sites, or away from premises.
A building policy protects things that stay in the building. Inland marine protects tools, machinery, and equipment that move — on a truck, at a job site, or sitting in a yard.
The name is old. The idea is simple. If a $40,000 lift, a set of specialty tools, or a piece of heavy equipment leaves the shop, a standard property policy may cover little or none of it. Contractors equipment and inland marine forms can schedule specific machines or blanket a class of tools. We look at where the equipment lives overnight, how it is transported, and whether leased or borrowed machines should be included. This is one of the most common gaps we find in contractor and logistics accounts.
Who this is for
What it typically covers
A simple example
A trailer with a compact excavator is stolen from a job site over a weekend. If that machine was only listed on the building policy at the shop address, the claim can fail. Scheduled equipment coverage is what is built for that loss.
Good to know
Coverage, eligibility, and terms vary by location and underwriting.
