Universal Life Insurance UL / IUL

Flexible permanent life insurance — including guaranteed UL (GUL) and indexed UL (IUL) — with adjustable premiums and a cash-value account.

Who this is for

People who want permanent coverage with more premium flexibility than whole life · Buyers who need a no-lapse guarantee to a stated age (GUL) · Clients considering indexed UL for accumulation plus a death benefit · Business and estate cases that need a designed permanent policy

Universal life is permanent coverage with a flexible premium. You can often pay more, pay less, or skip a payment if the cash value can carry the cost of insurance. The tradeoff is that the policy has to be managed.

How it works

There is more than one design. Traditional UL credits a declared interest rate. Guaranteed UL (GUL) is built mainly for a no-lapse death benefit to a stated age, with little emphasis on cash value. Indexed UL (IUL) credits interest using a formula tied to an index, with a cap, floor, and participation rate — it is not a direct investment in the market. Variable UL (VUL) uses separate accounts and can lose value; it requires a prospectus and is not the right first conversation for most households. We start with the job: lifelong death benefit at the lowest sustainable premium, cash-value accumulation, or a guarantee to a specific age. Then we match GUL, IUL, or another UL form. Large premium cases, older ages, and impaired-risk files are in appetite. Illustrations are hypothetical. We will walk the guaranteed column, not only the illustrated one.

Who this is for

  • People who want permanent coverage with more premium flexibility than whole life
  • Buyers who need a no-lapse guarantee to a stated age (GUL)
  • Clients considering indexed UL for accumulation plus a death benefit
  • Business and estate cases that need a designed permanent policy

What it typically covers

  • A death benefit that can last for life if the policy is funded as designed
  • A cash-value account that earns a declared, guaranteed, or indexed credit
  • Flexible premiums within the limits of the contract
  • Riders such as overloan protection or a long-term care rider, when added

A simple example

A 52-year-old wants a $1 million death benefit to age 121 and does not care about cash value. A GUL priced to the no-lapse guarantee is usually the cleaner fit than an IUL illustrated at a high cap.

Good to know

  • IUL is not a stock market investment. Caps, floors, and participation rates can change.
  • Underfunded UL is how policies lapse. We review funding, not only the year-1 premium.
  • Variable UL involves market risk and a prospectus. Ask whether it is even available for your situation.

Coverage, eligibility, premiums, and underwriting vary by age, health, state, and carrier. Illustrations are not guarantees. This is not tax, legal, or investment advice.
