A business owners policy exists because small firms keep buying the same two things: protect the stuff, and protect the business if someone gets hurt. Packaging general liability with commercial property can be simpler and cheaper than two custom forms.

Eligibility is the catch. Carriers write BOPs for offices, retail, and light service. They do not write them for every trade, every manufacturer, or every risk that lives on job sites all day. If the operation has already outgrown the box, forcing a BOP is how you get a non-renewal or a denied class.

Stay in a BOP when

  • You have a defined location, modest payroll, and customers who come to you.
  • You want one policy for contents, the suite, and slip-and-fall liability.
  • Business income can be added without building a custom package.

Split GL and property when

Either way, a BOP is not cyber, not E&O, and not flood. Read what to review before renewing commercial liability before you treat the anniversary as automatic.
